ABSTRACT

As everybody knows, Samson made just one big mistake with Dalila. Admittedly, their whole relationship had been something of a misjudgment. He was a champion of the oppressed Hebrews, she a flower of the oppressing Philistines; he a nazarite (or ahwist ascetic), she an idolatrous harlot. Worse, their affection had been conspicuously unmutual, with Dalilah attempting, repeatedly and deceitfully, to betray her strongman to her compatriots. nevertheless, Samson persisted in the affair. Being invincible, he could, presumably, have persisted as long as he liked. All but for one thing, the one thing that brought him down: he told his fatal Philistiness the secret of his strength.
