ABSTRACT

Surprisingly, there do not appear to be any published social anthropological monographs on student evangelical groups operating at universities in the USA. However, I think it is important to examine the student evangelical groups at American universities in their university context and see if, from the data that can be drawn upon, the model of liminality under discussion here would be workable. one significant reason for my drawing upon the USA is not only simply to broaden the scope of the enquiry but also because the university system in the USA – unlike in a country such as Finland for example – is extremely broad in terms of the degree of liminality and there is some social scientific research which has compared universities with different levels of liminality and examined the kinds of student evangelical groups that appear to operate in these contexts.
