Lay Participation in the Regulatory Process

This chapter considers the role and importance of lay participation within the GMC’s regulatory process.1 It is beyond the scope of this book and the research which underpins it to investigate in detail the adjudicatory practice of particular lay members in individual hearings.2 Rather, wider observations are drawn from the case studies previously discussed and from elsewhere, about the overall importance of lay participation and the types of lay membership which might be desirable.
