ABSTRACT

Up to now we have discussed the concept of structure and the nature of the structure of language that is constitutive of its semantics. However, what does it mean for an entity to have a structure in the first place? In particular, what does it mean for language to have the inferential structure which we claim condenses into the meanings of its expressions? In particular, is here 'having a structure' more like 'containing copper' (a matter of possessing something 'by itself), or rather more like 'being in perspective' (i.e. that of being seen, by us, in a certain way)?
