ABSTRACT

Thetheoreticalapproachestolanguagewhichcanbeencounteredinthe twentiethcenturyarediverse.Ontheoneextreme,thereareapproaches whicharebasedonseeinglanguageasakindofmathematicalstructureand consequentlyonseeingthetheoryoflanguageasanapplicationof mathematicsorlogic.Thiskindofapproachhasbeenadoptedbythe mainstreamanalyticphilosophersaswellasbythemajorityoflogicians andoflinguistsafterChomsky;andithasyielded,besidesother,anumberof mathematicalandlogico-mathematicaltheoriesofsyntaxandsemantics.The characteristiccredooftheapproachesofthiskindcanbeseeninMontague's (1974,p.188)claimthatthereisnoprincipaldifferencebetweennaturaland formallanguages.
