ABSTRACT

This quotation from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe nicely illustrates the reception of Dutch painting in the neighbouring countries. In Frankfurt, Hamburg, Paris and London, local painters adapted the ‘Dutch manner’ (Holländermode) and spread the taste for Dutch art among collectors. A decisive role was also played by imports of Dutch and Flemish paintings and the immigration of Dutch painters. The enthusiasm for Dutch art coincided with the emergence of an art market through which England, France and Germany inherited institutions of the Dutch Golden Age such as picture auctions and exhibitions.
