ABSTRACT

Grosseteste then takes delight in describing how theology acts as a net, which has now become the net of Peter (in contrast to the net of the Devil). While theology captures humanity, as a net captures fish, it does so only when individuals freely choose to enter the net. Naturally, they need some aid as well as some coaxing: good works illuminate the mind so they can see the net, and preaching warns them of the dangers if they do not break free from the net of the Devil and swim to Peter’s net, where there is both liberty and nothing to fear.4
