ABSTRACT
Ivfuslirn society was not interested in the problem of the pains of manual labourers, and did not worry about increasing its ind11strial output. On the one hand, upholding slavery ensured that there wa.<> never any shortage of manual labourers and, on the other, employing this servile population meant that there was no need for research in the lleld of inventions, which was therefore neglected. Furthermore, industry remaitwd in the hands of craftsmen, except perhaps the textile indnstry, and was oriented towards the production of objects for everyday use. This was another reason why equipment remained stationary and no technical revolution turned nwthods upside down.
