ABSTRACT

This chapter looks in more detail at the leadership of people as individuals. Project managers are leaders and leaders exercise power over others with the objective of getting others to do willingly what they want them to do. In the pursuit of that objective managers have seven different powers which can be used either singly or in a mix of two or more. Poor working conditions will dissatisfy but putting them right will only remove the dissatisfaction, it will not necessarily motivate unless feel that they are also being recognised. When considering power it is important to use the most appropriate power base for the situation. Use of coercion with knowledgeable and experienced project team members is probably not a good idea. Foster ideas from individuals and give them the responsibility for carrying them out. Identify and train a deputy to take over as project manager should it be required.
