ABSTRACT

Castles in the air are built when project managers underestimate the resources they need for the work to be done. To assess the people resources needed, transfer the information from the logic network to a bar chart. The bar chart or Gantt chart further builds on the picture of the project. When looking at the people needed to staff the project it is important to start at the beginning. This may seem obvious, but it is all too easy to consider what is possible in the way of securing resources rather than what is needed. Resource levelling has its costs. It has been done at the expense of slack. As a general guide look for a remainder of some 10-20 per cent slack after smoothing the project. However, the information given by good software packages can be most useful in saving time for the project manager who has first understood the project schedule.
