ABSTRACT

The analysis of the survey proved to be extremely helpful in determining the most interesting and advanced examples of digital cities and thence suggesting a group of possible case studies.

Within this group, two initiatives were selected for comparison: Iperbole in Bologna, and Digital City Bristol. The observation of the web sites related to these initiatives, carried out for the survey, had already provided some basic knowledge of these two projects. It was evident that Bologna and Bristol were two of the most developed and interesting digital cities in Europe. Iperbole Bologna proved this further by winning the so-called ‘Bangemann Challenge’ award for public administrations in early 1997, and it was one of the most prominent members of the ‘Telecities’ group, promoted by the EU.
