ABSTRACT

Starting from the 1 980s, UN peacekeeping operations were linked to the implementation of peace agreements, and the activities of peacemaking and peacebuilding. Following these so-called 'second-generation' peacekeeping operations, 'third-generation' peacekeeping operations in the post-Cold War era have been characterised by mandates that entail involvement in both civilian and military activities.
