ABSTRACT

This chapter examines both the process and the effect in relation to a sample of lone mothers in Hong Kong. It discusses planned using a feminist research methodology. The chapter also discusses how the two samples making up the study were drawn and the problems encountered. It explains the methods of analysis and interpretation of the data. Published census data, interviews with mothers and postal interviews with social security officials. The information based on census is unclear, limited and partial as the Census and Statistics Department never had a clear definition on lone-parent families. To understand the labour supply of lone mothers in Hong Kong, it would be inadequate to rely solely on the information from census, the statistical data still provide us with a general background of the economic situations of lone mothers in Hong Kong. The living areas of lone mothers are closely connected to the housing policy of Hong Kong.
