ABSTRACT

The lure of the local is not merely a recent invention. It is evident also in Roman culture and most probably originates much earlier than this. Roman politics of conquest ensured that their sense of place was carried throughout the empire. The organization of the city worked as a model of control, which transported the Roman way of life to all the new territories, including the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of the third century BC. Thus, we can see how the Roman conquerors reproduced a ‘little Rome’, the metropolis, in every ex novo foundation in the new territories.
