ABSTRACT

The majority of the population in most countries around the world drinks alcohol. In the UK, nine out of every ten adults are drinkers. Vast amounts of money are spent upon this drug, and alcohol has considerable priority as a necessary item. The average UK household spends more each week on alcohol to drink at home than it does on fruit and vegetables. More than two thirds of men and more than half of the women in England have drunk alcohol in the previous week, and about a third have drunk more than the recommended amounts of alcohol. About a quarter of the adult population could be classified as drinking at a level that is likely to damage their health.
