ABSTRACT

In order to represent the Church of England’s sacramental teaching we may begin with two influential catechisms: that of Thomas Marshall (1621-85; Fig. 2.1) published in 1679, and the larger work of Gabriel Towerson, Rector of Welwynne, Hertfordshire, published in three volumes between 1676 and 1688. The former is a practical work for parish priests, whereas the latter is a heavyweight theological work. What they have in common is they both give an explanation of the catechism as contained in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
