Alice'scnt1c1smofhersister'sbookatthebeginningofAlice's AdventuresinWonderlandcancertainlynotbelevelledatLewisCarroll's tale.Itisinterlacedwithdialoguebetweenthecharactersandfurthermore Alicefrequentlytalkstoherself.Asforthepictures,Carrollinitially producedhisownillustrations,butthefirstandstillmostcelebrated publishedillustratorwasofcourseJohnTenniel(CohenandWakeling eds.,2003).Dialogue,sceneryandcostumearevitalelementsintheatrical performance,asCarrollwasfullyawarefromstagingplaysonhis marionettetheatre.Intheinterimbetweenthoseyouthfulactivitiesand writingAlice'sAdventuresinWonderland,hehadbecomearegular theatregoerduringaperiodwhenelaboratescenery,lavishcostumesand considerabletechnicalvirtuositywereevidentonthenation'sstages.
