I. lNTRODUCTION The philosophical writings of Immanuel Kant continue to exert a

powerful inBuence in legal philosophy. In theoretical discussions of criminal law,2 the law of property,J tort law,4 contract law,s and many other areas,6 Kant's works are widely regarded as an important source of nonutilitarian ideas about distributive, corrective, and retributive justice.
