ABSTRACT

Over the past several years, a variety of important new institutions and procedures have greatly improved the state’s handling of crimes against women, among other matters. The creation of a government-run shelter has meant that girls and women who are likely victims of honor-related murders are no longer sent to the women’s prison at Juweideh for “protective custody.” Judges are receiving training in human rights and women’s rights. Specialized police institutions are increasingly capable of dealing with domestic violence.
