ABSTRACT

The theory of artistic value which I now propose - the Artistic Value Hypothesis (AVH) - builds upon both the epistemology of the SRH (in Ch 2) and the preceding Chapter’s ontology of art as action type, embracing both the ATH and the IMH. As in the analysis of ontology, I will preface my argument by drawing on Furtwängler’s personal insight into the value of art work, before introducing an important recent consideration of the subject by Budd, in his book Values o f Art: Pictures, Poetry and Music (1995). This account of the value of art is not - and does not seek to be - exhaustive, but will be sufficiently detailed to both complete the account of the nature of art generally and permit subsequent examination of value within the LAH. I will start by very briefly reviewing the relevant arguments to date.
