ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the construction of the Argentine national identity in a conversation about the current immigration to Argentina. It centres on the sequential analysis of a discussion among Argentine school teachers. While talking about the growing immigration from Argentina’s poorer neighbouring countries, the interlocutors define the ‘typical’ properties, ways of conduct and attitudes of their own national group and discuss which of these characteristic features constitute Argentine national identity. The aim of my contribution is twofold.
