ABSTRACT
Many rural areas in the EU result from an accumulation of adverse factors such as peripheral situation in relation to economic centres, meagre natural resources, demographic and socio-economic conditions unfavourable for agriculture. Mountain areas of the Mediterranean countries where people have moved to urban areas of their country or emigrated are widespread, with many individual cases.
