ABSTRACT

Hardlandscapesurfacesmaybedividedintothreemaintypes:monolithic,unit andgranulatInthisbooktheterm'paving'isusedforpedestrianareas,footpaths andplaygrounds,whiletheterm'roadway'isusedforhardsurfacescarryingtraffic suchashardstandings,lightlytraffickedprivateroadsandcarparks,thoughthe distinctionbetweenthetwotypesisnotprecise.Heavydutyroadconstructionis outsidethescopeofthisbook,asitistheconcernofthehighwayengineer,and shouldsuchworkcomewithinthescopeofalandscapecontract,itwillnotbe somethingthatlandscapedesignerswilltacklethemselves,thoughtheymayhave toallowforheavydeliverylorriesandaccessforengineeringplantintheirpartof thedesign.Sturdypavingisanessentialcomponentofanylandscapedesign,as landscapemaintenanceisbecomingevermoremechanized,andwherethe traditionalhandmowerwouldcauselittledamagecrossingapavedarea,amodem tractorandgangmowermaycauseseverescarringandcrackingunlessthepaving isdesignedto.taketheirweightandabrasion.Aspublicbodiesarenowobligedto usecontractservices,thereismuchlesscontrolovertheworkersonthesite,and nothingbutastoutbarrierwillpreventcontractorstakingtheshortestwaytothe job,evenifitisacross'pedestrianonly'paving.Itisthereforeveryimportantthat thelandscapedesignershouldbeabletospecifytherighttypeofpavingforthejob, andbeawareoftheeffectofaparticulartypeofpavingonthedesign.Typical examplesaregiveninFigure1.1.
