ABSTRACT

In 2005, I was very fortunate to be invited by Emma Franz to participate in her documentary feature film, Intangible Asset Number 82 (2008). My participation in the project was limited to appearing in various scenes and conducting several interviews, and did not extend to any aspects of the film’s development, production, or conceptual focus. The film, directed and produced by Franz, has won numerous awards including Best Documentary Film at the 2009 Cape Town International Film Festival and an AFI (Australian Film Institute) award for best sound in a documentary. A central feature of the film is an exploration of aesthetic principles relating to Korean music practice through interviews with ritual musicians Pak Pyŏngch’ŏn, Kim Sŏkch’ul, Kim Yong T’aek, and Kim Jung Hee, as well as percussionists Jin You Rim and Kim Dong Won, and p’ansori artist Bae Il Dong.
