What is the most reassuring phrase in Levinas? Perhaps it is ‘il y a’, the horror of being notwithstanding. And the most paralysing phrase? If it is the end of safety we have in mind (as glimpsed, perhaps, by Job, before the Lord took away), then perhaps it is ‘au-delà de’. This is to ‘unsay’ what was said at the outset.
