ABSTRACT

This chapter includes a selection of treaties related to the protection of the marine environment and the management of marine resources. It reproduces the part of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) that deals specifically with the marine environment. The chapter also includes two specific instruments concerning marine pollution as an illustration of the work of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in this field: MARPOL 73/78 and the 1996 Protocol to the London Convention. The chapter contains an Agreement linked to the UNCLOS which seeks to define more precisely the obligations of states with regard to the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks. It incorporates the 1946 International Whaling Convention which is one of the most important treaties concerning the protection of marine mammals as well as a relatively old treaty. The chapter focuses on international watercourses reproduces the only existing global convention on international watercourses.
