ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a case study of airport Runway, used for negotiation skill training workshop. The airport authority has been under considerable pressure to increase passenger and freight capacity at the airport. On the southern boundary economic developments crowd right up to the airport. Local political representatives favour a new runway on the grounds of 'national economic development', 'social progress' and 'national pride'. So does local business, which claims that the current inadequate airport holds back economic expansion. Public disquiet about expanding the airport, however, is attracting media interest. The main opposition comes from a minority of residents around the airport, although they do not yet form a majority. Participants sometimes include suggestions that the runway will create new jobs. The learning outcome the trainers looking for is an understanding by the participants of how to identify interests and the related negotiable issues that address the interests of parties in a negotiation.
