ABSTRACT

This chapter examines curricula that are currently in widespread use; namely, the second edition of Facing History and Ourselves, which enjoys a high profile throughout North America and the first edition of Lessons of the Holocaust, a teaching pack that has been sold to more than a thousand secondary schools in the United Kingdom. It illustrates the different priorities of Holocaust educators. Lessons of the Holocaust covers the historical background to the Holocaust and was written by the distinguished academic Robert Wistrich. Facing History and Ourselves is a United States-based educational foundation that started as a local grassroots organisation in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1976. It is designed for use in social studies, literature, art and science lessons although 'most teachers incorporate (it) into a history or language arts course'.
