Besides the differences which occurred in the u~ul matters, the primary reason why there existed disagreement between the Sunni and Shi'f sects on legal matters, was their different approach to and understanding of the principle of ijtihiid, and of the third source of Islamic jurisprudence, i.e. the ijmä'. In the debate between both the sides on the problems of u~ul al-fiqh, they usually used justification based on the ijmii'.
