ABSTRACT

Contempmary debates on the meaning of the Q uran are camplex and often coniroversial. Many Muslims are searching for a balance beiween "traditional" ways of living and modern conditions. How Muslims approach this balance is often related to the way in which they interpret the Quran. In this respect. most Muslims can be loosely grouped into one of three main categories: Textualists, Semi-textualists or Contextualists. These categories give a useful insight into the general trends of today's quranic interpretation.
