The Evolution of the Regime for the River Rhine

In the last decades, the riparian states of the River Rhine have attempted to achieve nothing short of a miracle: the return of healthy runs of salmon in the River Rhine. The return of the salmon should symbolise the fundamental transformation from the historically prevailing situation where the river was free for all, to a situation in which riparian states accept limitations on their uses for the purpose of ecosystem protection.
