ABSTRACT

You are a lawyer with an aid agency in the region. Naseen comes to see you and explains that she has cousins in the U.K., the U.S., and Canada and that she can live with any of them while she finishes high school. Assuming she can get out of the country, where does she have the best chance of being granted asylum as a refugee? 2. Overview Domestic violence refers to a broad range of actions, from verbal abuse, including threats, to spousal rape and murder, that take place within the privacy of an intimate relationship, often within the marital home. Domestic violence has been a part of marriage and other domestic relationships for millions of women throughout the world. Even if a husband did not beat his wife, both knew that he could do so if he so chose. Even if there are domestic laws prohibiting spouse abuse, as there are in the U.S., women are often ashamed or afraid to report it. Within the past ten years, however, domestic violence has been internationally recognized as a crime against women. It is a global problem and international family law deals with it in three specific contexts.
