ABSTRACT

The approach of combining environmental protection issues with regional planning tasks is still rare among the governments of the German federal states. Yet it has proven its value especially during the reconstruction of the Free State of Saxony, one of the five new federal states in the east of Germany. This has given us the opportunity to immediately combine ecological and economic concerns during the development of the infrastructure and the economy, which has also enabled us to consider many possibly conflicting goals.
