ABSTRACT
The 20th century has shown a sharply increasing number of environmental problems. Most of these are associated with (over)exploitation of natural resources, generation of waste, accelerated extinction of species and degradation of ecological functions. This resulted in growing environmental awareness symbolised in phrases like 'Sustainable Development' (WCED, 1987) and 'Environmental Quality' (EQ).
