Earlyintheeveningof14May1802,forty-five-year-oldEtienne-Rubert Cambaceres,newlyappointedconcordatoryarchbishopofRouenandyounger brotheroftheSecondConsul,arrivedinthecapitalofhisnewdiocese.1 WarrnlygreetedbyBeugnot,thearchbishopremainedinapartmentsatthe prefecturewhilsttheepiscopalpalacewasfranticallyrefurbished.Oneweek later,Cambaceresjubilantlyenteredthecathedral.Fortheyoungeronlookers amongstthelargecrowdthathadgatheredtowatchtheprocession,the spectaclemusthaveseemedratherbizarre-RomanCatholicismwasbeing officiallyrestoredtothestreetsofRouenandtheFrenchRepublicaftermore thanadecade'sabsence.
