Work in the aviation, nuclear, pharmaceutical and other safety-critical, profitdriven industries has indicated that those who seek to be world leaders in the Modem World face common problems in meeting the challenges of accomplishing human and organisational excellence in performance. In this paper we defme the common characteristics of these industries with regard to managing organisational performance, highlight areas currently overlooked, and suggest some new proactive approaches based on work currently being performed in the American nuclear industry.
