ABSTRACT

This final chapter returns to the strictly down to earth, with some experience-based advice which I hope will be useful to all readers, but perhaps especially to those at the start of their career as information professionals. Anyone trying to carry through the processes described in the earlier chapters, and involved in taking action on the outcomes, is likely to encounter problems and challenges – usually in the form of people. It can be a painful experience, especially the first time around, but if you’re prepared to see it as an integral part of organizational life, it can be a great opportunity for developing social and tactical skills, and not without entertaining aspects. And it’s not all battles; there can also be fruitful negotiations, allies found in unexpected quarters, arrivals at mutual understandings, and, sometimes, victories over potential foes which are won off the field, without them realizing what has happened till it’s too late for them to do anything about it.
