Thepurposeofthischapterwillbetotracetheevolutionoftheprincipleof individualdutyfromtheGreco-Romaneratothepresent.Thecontributionsof thosepoliticalphilosopherswhomadethegreatestimpactonthisprocesswillbe examinedinparticular.Aswillbeseen,theprincipleofdutyoccupiedapreeminentpositioninpoliticalandsocialphilosophyandthinkinguntilitsrelatively recentsupersessionbytheprincipleofindividualright.Thelatterportionofthis chapterwillproposeanumberofcontemporarysourcesorjustificationsforthe principleofduty.
