ABSTRACT
In this chapter general issues relating to multimedia information retrieval (MMIR) are discussed. An initial discussion about general problems with multimedia is followed by an examination of the aims of MMIR systems. The principles that might govern a good MMIR system are reviewed, followed by a brief outline of some of the approaches to indexing multimedia information as a prelude to Chapter 5 in which indexing approaches are discussed in more detail.
