ABSTRACT

This essay is a study on the concept of second level reading in Eco, both in his theory and in practice. I will start with an analysis of Eco’s theory of interpretation, focusing on its different levels and proving the presence of an hierarchisation of the readership which culminates with the skilled and learned model reader of the second level. Secondly, after having briefly introduced Eco’s second level reading of Sylvie I will apply the same method to Foucault's Pendulum.
