ABSTRACT

This statement made by the young chairman of a Turkish mosque in the city of Rotterdam illustrates strikingly clearly the kind of discussion which is going on among leading circles of Islamic organizations in the Netherlands. Since the early 1990s, an important shift seems to have taken place in the thinking about the strategies, working procedures and in the articulation of interests of Turkish Islamic organizations. These developments come down mainly to a greater focus on the position of Muslims in Dutch society, or rather of Muslims as Dutch citizens.
