ABSTRACT

In the following we present some findings from a research project on the collective identity of Turkish migrants in Germany.1 This project was initiated against the background of public discussions about the failure of integration in the case of Turkish migrants. A common assumption in these discussions holds that Turkish migrants and their descendants do have a collective Turkish identity and that this identity would foster the existing separation from German mainstream society. However, it is an empirical question whether Turkish migrants actually have got a collective identity and just how significant it is. It was the aim of our research project to help answer this question.
