ABSTRACT

By definition, the pilot is the very heart of Human Factors. The pilot is the huMan around which all other aspects of the system are designed to operate. The only option for modifying the huMan component is by training, however as a result of all individuals being different in their abilities and knowledge, some people are more likely to make good pilots (after training) than others. The selection process analyses the requirements of the job (derived primarily from the Mission and the Machine) and attempts to match job applicants possessing the basic underlying abilities to the needs of the task (see Figure 1.2). The selection process is controlled by the airlines Management function, usually the Human Resources department.
