ABSTRACT
It was a very close run thing between combining this chapter with the previous one on automation or giving it a chapter on its own. In the end, it was given a chapter on its own on the basis that not all automation involves a computer. Also, there are issues worth discussing within the context of computing and HCI which may get overlooked in a more generic treatise on automation. Hence, as the modern flight deck is one large, nontraditional computer interface these issues received a chapter of its own.
