ABSTRACT

Human Information Processing provides a system model describing how people receive, store, integrate, retrieve and use information. It deals with everything from stimulus to response while also providing for complex problem solving and decision making. Human Information Processing theory forms the basis of other key concepts such as Workload and Situation Awareness, both covered in more detail in the following chapters. It also provides the foundation for many aspects of the design of the flight deck, particularly the information systems (displays and computer interfaces) and automation (see Part Three of this volume: The Machine).
