ABSTRACT

TheDIYAproject,launchedin1998,aimedatbuildingandevaluatingimproved methodsforHuman-MachineInterface(HMI)designandevaluation.Itsmaingoalis toimprovecrewsituationawareness,oneofthekeysafetyfactorsincivilaviation. ControlledFlightIntoTerrain(CFIT),oneofthetwodesigncasesoftheDIYA project,focusesonthepreventionofaspecificcategoryofgroundcollisions.Such collisionsareusuallyduetoinappropriateterrainawareness.TheCognitiveFunction Analysis(CFA)methodwasusedtosupportthisdesigncase.CFAisacognitive engineeringmethodthataimsatdescribingthecognitivefunctionsusedbyhuman agentsinteractingwithautomatedsystems,inordertohelpthedesignteamoptimise thehuman-centreddesignofthosesystems,forexample.AppropriateAerospatialeMatraAirbuspersonnelweretrainedonandappliedCFAtotheCFITdesigncasein theindustrialcontextofthedesignoffice.Thischapterdescribessomeofthiswork andthemainlessonslearned.
