ABSTRACT
An examination of the depositions of the Theatre sacre was published and circulated anonymously in London in 1708: the pamphlet was entitled Examen du Theatre sacre des Cevennes. The title of the pamphlet was intended to attract both French and English readers of the Theatre sacre by announcing that the work consisted of an examination of the depositions which had also been circulated in English translation: Traduit en Anglois sous le Titre de Cry from the Desart. The place and date of publication of the Examen is indicated at the foot of the title-page. The method of collecting evidence was adhered to by those involved in the compilation of the depositions of the Theatre sacre and the declarations included in the Examen. De la Mothe's central concern in compiling the Examen is revealed in the 'Avis au Lecteur'. The conclusions drawn by de la Mothe, were not, however, based upon close examination of the symptoms exhibited by inspired Cevenols.
