ABSTRACT

Prior to the 1970s such material was taught, and philosophical work relevant to the background theoretical issues was carried on, but not under the label 'informal logic '. Our account of those 'predecessors', in Section III, must be sketchy in the extreme for reasons of space and time. We here also describe the monographs that had theoretical influence, the early influential texts, and the conference and journal activity that developed.
