The notion of Israel’s military origins is supported by the Merneptah stela, an ancient Egyptian inscription dating from ca. 1209 BCE This earliest datable text that mentions Israel refers to it as a people living, it seems, in northern Palestine, as a group to be reckoned with by the Egyptian army.3 In this military inscription ancient Israel first makes its appearance in history.
