Introduction to the Urban Health System and Review of Reform Initiatives

This chapter first provides a brief introduction to the evolution of urban health services and health insurance schemes which have been developed since the foundation of the People's Republic. It then describes and discusses the reforms of urban health services and health insurance schemes which have been initiated during the two decades since the economic reform launched in the late 1970s and their implications for equity and efficiency in urban China.
